Planet Tutorial in Photoshop
by - Inventor

How do I make a nice simple planet in less than 10 minutes. For this tutorial you dont need special programs. You just need photoshop. If you have terragen or 3d studio Max...you can use them to make textures etc. For your planet but thats not necessary. Are you ready to start? Ok here we go...

Texture

1. The first what we going to do is search a good texture. You can find them on stock sites or make your own textures. If you find a good one you open it in photoshop and go to edit > define pattern... And you give it a name. Now take the Elliptical Marquee Tool (M) and make a circle (Be sure its big enough, I take something about 2000x2000 pixels) Its best if you take style: Fixed Size and select your size. Now go to Edit > Fill and Use: Pattern and then choose your texture. If your texture is a bit to light or you want soem more variety. Duplicate your layer and select Multiply instead of Normal (on the duplicated layer) Then you can change the opacity a bit according to your liking.

2. Now we going to start to make it look like a real planet. Go to Filter > Distort > Spherize and take 100%. Now we got the base. If you want, you can now make your planet smaller (Edit > Transform > Scale) You can use different textures then you got even more variety. But we keep it simple. You still can try things by yourself but this are the basic steps.

Lightning

3. We have our texture but now we finally going to do the big stuff, we gone add the lightning this is not so hard to do just follow the steps (you may always try your own settings and colors ) Start with making a new layer and call it lightning. Hold the selection and fill it with a color ( It doesnt matter which color ) And change fill to 0% ( Now you see your texture again ) Now we really start. Open the blending options from your layer ( lightning ) and use these settings...

4. Now you already got something like this. Whats missing? Ow yeah the shadow, ok than we gone add the shadow. You can do it on different ways but I just do it with a brush. Make a new layer and call it shadow. Than take the Brush Tool (B) and select a soft brush and brush on the side you want dark ( The side where is no lightning ) Tip. After brushing change opacity from your layer ( shadow ) to 90% so you still cant see a bit of the texture.

5.
Now you would got something like this picture. To finish it you could use the eraser tool (E) and select again a soft brush and delete a bit of the outer glow on the right ( where the shadow is )

Finish

Now you have a very simple but nice planet in less then 10 minutes. I hope you like the result and learned something from this tutorial. If you got any questions just ask and I will try to give a helpfull answer. ( View example )
